Mickey on the Road

[Plays May 13-23 as part of the MSPIFF40 Film Festival; for more information, log on to mspfilm.org/festivals/mspiff for full schedule.] When a strong-willed, owl-tattooed Taiwanese woman (Pao-Wen Yeh), who dresses like a tomboy and is skilled in martial arts, decides to go to Guangzhou, China, in search of her estranged, factory owner father for her lonely, depressed, alcoholic mother (Ke-Li Miao) in Taipei and her blonde gogo dancing best friend (Yi-Ling Chang) travels with her to find her ghosting Chinese boyfriend to let him know she is pregnant in Mian-Mian Lu's bittersweet, touching, somber, unpredictable, 95-minute, 2020 film, the trip does not go as hoped after their luggage is stolen and they find themselves being helped by a well-to-do, cigar-smoking stranger they met on a bus.
