horizontal line

[Thematic material and brief violence.] [Opens Aug. 28 in select theaters in limited release.] Gorgeous cinematography, sets, and costumes highlight this disappointing, convoluted, offbeat, crazy, miscast, star-studded (Hugh Laurie, Aneurin Barnard, Ben Whishaw, Gwendoline Christie, Benedict Wong, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Paul Whitehouse, Anthony Welsh, and Daisy May Cooper), 119-minute, 2019 comedic satire adapted from Charles Dickens's classic semi-autobiographical 1850 Victorian novel David Copperfield that chronicles the tumultuous life of a young wannabe writer (Jairaj Varsani) who is discarded by his abusive British stepfather (Darren Boyd) after the death of his mother (Morfydd Clark) when he is forced to work at his family-owned factory in London until a teenager (Dev Patel) while living with an accordion-playing con artist (Peter Capaldi) and his wife (Bronagh Gallagher) who end up in debtor's prison after being pursued by tenacious creditors, then his eccentric aunt (Tilda Swinton) pays for his living expenses and education to be a writer and a gentleman, and he then accepts a job working for an attorney (Matthew Cottle) after he falls for his pretty singing daughter (Morfydd Clark) only to fall in love with a pretty, feisty African-American (Rosalind Eleazer) he knew in his childhood.
