Gus Van Sant's dark, somber, factually based, well-acted, star-dotted (Jack Black, Rooney Mara, and Mark Webber), 113-minute biopic adapted from John Callahan;s 1989 autobiography that delves into the difficult life of alcoholic, quadriplegic, cynical, talented cartoonist John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix), who ended up paralyzed after a cat accident in Portland, Ore., and eventually finds his calling when he joins AA with other members (Jonah Hill, Udo Kier, et al.) and publishes his irreverent, satirical, funny cartoons.
