While a 12-year-old boy (Oakes Fegley), who is grieving for the death of his librarian mother (Michelle Williams), runs away from the hospital in Gunflint, Minn., after suddenly becoming deaf when lightning passes through his telephone in 1977 and heads to New York City on the bus to search for his father in this engaging, convoluted, somber, star-studded (James Urbaniak, Tom Noonan, and Amy Hargreaves), 117-minute film adapted from Brian Selznick's 2011 critically acclaimed novel, a deaf girl (Millicent Simmonds) in 1927 New Jersey heads to the Big Apple to find an actress (Julianne Moore) she admires.
