After an intelligent, free-spirited, quirky widower (Viggo Mortensen) learns from his estranged, wealthy in-laws (Frank Langella and Ann Dowd) and relatives (Kathryn Hahn and Steve Zahn) that his institutionalized, mentally-ill wife (Trin Miller) who suffered from bipolar disorder has committed suicide in this bittersweet, poignant, well-acted, heart-tugging, humor-sprinkled, 118-minute film, he reluctantly decides to take his six smart-as-a-whip, home-schooled, grieving children (George MacKay, Annalise Basso, Samantha Isler, Nicholas Hamilton, Shree Crooks, and Charlie Shotwell) from the safety of their isolated, off-the-grid home in the woods of the Pacific Northwest to New Mexico for the funeral despite the potential risk of losing custody of his kids,
