Mr. Holmes

Amazing cinematography and scenery highlight this engaging, superbly acted, bittersweet, 104-minute film based on Mitch Cullin's 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind in which retired, dementia-plagued, guilt-ridden, beekeeping, famous British detective Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellen) desperately tries to remember and write down details of a case he believes he should never have accepted involving a worried husband (Patrick Kennedy) who wants to understand the erratic behavior of his distraught wife (Hattie Morahan) after the death of their two children while reminiscing about a trip to Japan on the invitation of a duplicitous Japanese businessman (Hiroyuki Sanada) and developing a close bond and friendship with the precocious, smart son (Mile Parker) of his widowed housekeeper (Laura Linney) near the White Cliffs of Dover in 1947.
