After a well-respected Moscow secret security officer (Tom Hardy), who grew up starving in an orphanage, is demoted in 1953 for making waves with his superior (Vincent Cassel) and then refuses to denounce his wife (Noomi Rapace) as a traitor and to stop questioning the brutal murders of two boys "where there are no murders in paradise" in this dark, somber, gut-wrenching, well-acted, star-studded (Gary Oldman, Paddy Considine, Charles Dance, Jason Clarke, Joel Kinnaman, and Ned Dennehy), 137-minute thriller set in the Stalin era of the USSR and based on Tom Rob Smith's first book in his trilogy, he and his schoolteacher wife are exiled and frustratingly continue their investigation together when they realize that many more boys have been slaughtered by a serial killer.
