Homesman, The

Engaging, somber, down-to-earth, unpredictable, star-studded (John Lithgow, James Spader, William Fichtner, Tim Blake Nelson, and Hailee Steinfeld), occasionally slow-paced, 122-minute western in which a pious, bossy, hard-working, music-loving, pioneer spinster (Hilary Swank) in the Nebraska territories and a scruffy drifter (Tommy Lee Jones), who she saves from a hanging, escort three mentally deranged housewives (Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, and Sonja Richter) on a harrowing, five-week journey to a minister's wife (Meryl Streep) in Iowa after each of them lost children during the previous harsh winter.
