Striking cinematography highlights this engaging, intriguing, intense, well-acted, 2011 film narrated by Jean-Claude Dauphin and based on Matthew G. Lewis's 1796 novel in which a headache-prone, rose-loving, well-admired Spanish friar (Vincent Cassell), who was raised by Capuchin monks (Jordi Dauder, Sergi López, Javivi, Pierre-Félix Gravière, et al.) after being abandoned at a monastery near Madrid in 1595, tested by Satan and begins a downward spiral after failing to protect a frightened pregnant nun (Roxane Duran) from the unforgiving mother superior (Geraldine Chaplin), a masked novice (Déborah François) saves him from poison, and then becomes obsessed bedding a beautiful girl (Joséphine Japy) who lives with her widowed mother (Catherine Mouchet) and is engaged to a handsome, smitten Spaniard.
