The Emancipation Proclamation takes center stage in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated, historically fascinating, well-acted, star-dotted (Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jackie Earle Haley, James Spader, David Strathairn, John Hawkes, Tim Blake Nelson, S. Epatha Merkerson, Bruce McGill, Hal Holbrook, Gloria Reuben, Lee Pace, and Jared Harris), 140-minute film, which is adapted from Doris Kearns Goodwin's novel Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, that chronicles the uphill battle of President Abraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis) to pass the 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution through the House of Representatives on Jan. 31, 1865, with the help of other politicians such as Thaddeus Stevens (Tommy Lee Jones) in an effort to abolish slavery and ultimately to bring about the end to the bloody Civil War.
