Monsieur Lazhar

After a teacher hangs herself in a Montréal classroom in this captivating, Oscar-nominated, down-to-earth, 2011 film, which is adapted from Evelyne de la Chenelière's 2004 play Bachir Lazhar, a widowed, 55-year-old Algerian refugee (Mohammed Fellag) who is seeking political asylum and claims to have teaching experience takes over teaching duties in the elementary class and tries to connect with the grieving, traumatized students (Sophie Nélisse, Vincent Millard, Émilien Néron, Marie-Ève Beauregard, Louis-David Leblanc, Seddik Benslimane, Gabriel Verdier, Marianne Soucy-Lord, et al.) and his peers (Brigitte Poupart, Jules Philip, et al.).
