Flowers of War, The

A dark, gut-wrenching, violent, well-acted, factually based, 145-minute, 2011 film adapted from Yan Geling's novel Flowers of Nanjing hich a freelance American mortician (Christian Bale) in Nanking tries to protect a young caretaker (Huang Tianyuan), a terrified group of virginal Chinese students (Zhang Xinyi, et al.), and thirteen gorgeous courtesans (Ni Ni, Yuemin Li, et al.) as they take refuge in a Catholic cathedral from the cruel invading Japanese soldiers (Dawei Tong, Atsurô Watabe, Takashi Yamanaka, Shigeo Kobayashi, et al.) who patrol the city killing soldiers and raping women in 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
