horizontal line

An Oscar-winning, fascinating, informative, 85-minute documentary that showcases obscure, humble, Dylan-esque, "inner city poet" singer/songwriter Rodriguez through interviews with Cape Town Mabu Record Shop owner Steve ‘Sugar' Segerman, construction worker colleague Rick Emerson, bricklayer Jerome Ferretti, The Brewery bartender Dan DiMaggio, music producers (such as Dennis Coffey, Mike Theodore, Robbie Mann, and Steve Rowland), music journalists Rian Malan and Craig Bartholomew-Strydom, former record label boss Steve M. Harris, former Sussex Records owner Clarence Avant, former South African censorship archivist Ilse Assman, Afrikan musician Willem Möller, and daughters Eva Alice, Regan, and Sandrae; excerpts from his songs such as Crucify Your Mind [1970], Sugar Man [1970], Cause [1971], I'll Slip Away [1973], Sandrevan Lullaby [1971], Street Boy [1971], A Most Disgusting Song [1971], Lifestyles [1971], Can't Get Away [1973], and The Establishment Blues [1970]; and culminates in video excerpts from his March 1998 concert in Cape Town, South Africa, in front of his multitude of longtime adoring fans.
