Sparkle In this engaging, albeit uneven remake of the 1976 film dotted with catchy songs, the road is long and bumpy for a shy, talented singer/songwriter (Jordin Sparks) in Detroit as she tries to make a success with her sisters, including an insecure sexpot (Carmen Ejogo) who ignores the love of her longtime boyfriend (Omari Hardwick) to hook up with an abusive comedian (Mike Epps) and a smart woman (Tika Sumpter) who really dreams of being a nurse, as a singing trio guided by a passionate, smitten, tenacious manager (Derek Luke) and thwarted by her disapproving, disillusioned mother (Whitney Huston) in 1968.
