Languid pacing and striking cinematography dominate this insightful, depressing, tragic love story, which is based on Thomas Hardy's classic Tess of the d'Ubervilles, in which a gorgeous, 19-year-old Indian woman (Freida Pinto), who lives with her poor parents, three siblings, and a grandmother, accepts a job from the unhappy, unfulfilled, charismatic, handsome son (Riz Ahmed) of a wealthy, blind British developer (Roshan Seth) at his family's hotel in Jaipur after her rickshaw owner father is severely injured in a car accident and eventually moves in with him at a seaside apartment in Bombay, but quickly becomes trapped and swallowed up in an abusive, out-of-control relationship when he returns from London after his father suffers a stroke.
