Hunger Games, The

In this intense, compelling, imaginative, highly anticipated, action-packed, well-paced, futuristic, dystopian, star-studded (Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, and Liam Hemsworth), 142-minute thriller, which is based on first book in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins, a tenacious, savvy, skilled, 16-year-old girl (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to replace her frightened sister (Willow Shields) to the relief of her widowed mother (Paula Malcomson) and represent her poverty-stricken coal mining district along with another smitten teenager (Josh Hutcherson) from district 12 in the brutal 74th annual Hunger Games in which twenty-four unlucky participants (Alexander Ludwig, Mackenzie Lintz, Annie Thurman, Dakota Hood, Ian Nelson, et al.) between the ages of 12 and 18 are randomly selected from twelve districts to fight to the death on live television for the entertainment of enthusiastic viewers while the masters of ceremonies (Stanley Tucci and Toby Jones) interview competitors and give up-to-the-minute updates.
