Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, A

Profane dialogue and violence permeate this gritty, dark, well-acted, slow-paced, coming-of-age, realistic, autobiographical 2005 film, which is based on Dito Montiel's novel, about a disgruntled Los Angeles novelist (Robert Downey, Jr.) who reminisces about his unhappy adolescence growing up as a teenager (Shia LaBeouf) with his dysfunctional parents (Dianne Wiest and Chazz Palminteri) in the mid-1980s and hanging out with his hotheaded best buddy (Channing Tatum) and other friends (Rosario Dawson, Scott Michael Campbell, et al.) in his multicultural Queens neighborhood when his worried mother begs him to return home to visit his estranged, sickly father.
