Synecdoche, New York

After his painter wife (Catherine Keener) and his 4-year-old daughter (Sadie Goldstein) move to Berlin in this exceedingly strange, complicated, winding, star-studded (Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hope Davis, et al.) Charlie Kaufmann film, a sickness-plagued, successful theater director (Philip Seymour Hoffman) eventually wins a MacArthur grant and spends more than 17 years of his messed up life in the warehouse district in Manhattan getting further from reality as he struggles to stage an unwieldy, unfocused play on a gargantuan set with a myriad of actors (Emily Watson, Dianne Wiest, Michelle Williams, Samantha Morton, Tom Noonan, et al.).
