Smart People

Crisp, smartly written dialogue dominates this dark, realistic, well-acted slice of life in which a self-absorbed, pompous, curmudgeonly, widowed literature professor (Dennis Quaid) at Carnegie-Mellon University is sleepwalking through his life until he meets a no-nonsense emergency room doctor (Sarah Jessica Parker) in Pittsburgh who ultimately triggers a positive change in the dysfunctional family dynamics with his mooching, wayward adopted brother (Thomas Haden Church); his poetic, distant son (Ashton Holmes); and his often condescending, high-achieving, unhappy teenage daughter (Ellen Page).
