Stop-Loss

While an angry, frustrated, decorated Army sergeant (Ryan Phillippe) goes AWOL with the help of the disenchanted fiancée (Abbie Cornish) of his childhood best friend (Channing Tatum) to the concern of his Texas parents (Ciarán Hinds and Linda Emond) after an Army colonel (Timothy Olyphant) unexpectedly tells him he must return to Iraq despite already serving two tours of duty in this realistic, gut-wrenching, well-acted, timely film, one mentally traumatized war buddy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) relives the horrors of war at home in his own backyard and tries to escape with a bottle and a gun and another surprisingly upbeat soldier (Victor Rasuk) tries to recover from severe, life-changing physical injuries.
