Pavilion of Women

Exquisite photography highlights this sad and 116-minute, 2001 touching film adapted from a Pearl S. Buck story about a beautiful 40-year-old Chinese woman (Yan Luo) who feels compelled to find a concubine and second wife (Yi Ding) to satisfy the insatiable sexual demands of her husband (Shek Sau), but the venture does not turn out as planned when she becomes infatuated with an American priest (Willem Dafoe) she hires to tutor her rebellious eldest son (John Cho), who ends up falling in love with his father's courtesan.
