Into the Great Silence

Overwhelming silence, repetitive chores and rituals, and daily prayers speak volumes in this dialogue and music free, intimate, insightful, nearly 3-hour documentary in which German filmmaker Philip Gröning lived at the isolated Grande Chartreuse monastery set in the idyllic French Alps for 6 months to examine the austere, monotonous, monastic life of the small group of reclusive, disciplined, devoted, and devout Carthusian monks, who are allowed to speak only on Sundays for 2 hours.
