Painted Veil, The

Magnificent scenery and stunning photography highlight this entertaining remake of the 1934 film based on the W. Somerset Maugham story in which a rich and spoiled daughter (Naomi Watts) moves to Shanghai after agreeing to marry a middle-class, stuffy bacteriologist (Edward Norton) in 1923 to escape her haughty parents in London, and when she foolishly has an affair with a womanizing consulate official (Liev Schreiber), the unforgiving and vengeful doctor drags her to an isolated mountainous village where a cholera epidemic has killed many.
