Good Shepherd, The

Heavy dialogue and a convoluted, intricate plot hinder this compelling, star-studded (William Hurt, Alec Baldwin, Billy Crudup, Joe Pesci, Michael Gambon, Timothy Hutton, Keir Dullea, et al.), but slow moving Robert DeNiro political film about an idealistic, stone-faced CIA agent (Matt Damon) who was an affluent member of the Skull and Bones Society as a student at Yale in the 1930s and whose lonely and isolated life during the Cold War in early 1960s increasingly is filled with secrets, lies, paranoia, distrust, and sacrifices as his loveless marriage to his bitter wife (Angelina Jolie) falls apart, and he is forced to chose between his fierce loyalty to his country and the love he has for his son (Eddie Redmayne).
