Libertine, The

Unsympathetic and unlikable characters combined with a snail-paced plot hinder this uneven, risqué, sad commentary on the life of the notorious, randy, bisexual English poet John Wilmot (Johnny Depp), a.k.a. the Earl of Rochester, who lived life in 1670s London to the extreme hilt with his close friends (Tom Hollander and Johnny Vegas) by drinking and fornicating excessively, who ignored his devoted wife (Rosamund Pike) for the affections of a neophyte stage actress (Samantha Morton) and a prostitute (Kelly Reilly), and who dug himself an early grave at the age of 33 by contacting syphilis, but he eventually earned posthumous critical acclaim for his writings during the reign of King Charles II (John Malkovich).
