Memoirs of a Geisha

Audiences may remain aloof and dry eyed despite gorgeous cinematography, dazzling sets, and richly colored kimonos in this Rob Marshall film in which a young, rain-eyed girl (Suzuka Ohgo) is separated from her older sister in 1930s Japan when her fisherman father sells her to a Kyoto geisha house and after enduring many years of loneliness and hardships, she finds hope when a kindhearted businessman (Ken Watanabe) befriends her on the street and eventually becomes the much-admired protégé (Ziyi Zhang) of a renowned geisha (Michelle Yeoh) and surpasses her mean-spirited, jealous rival (Gong Li) all the while continuing to love the caring Chairman she met as a child.
