In this grim, disappointing, boring film, Terry Gilliam oddly juxtaposes tidbits from fairytales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, The Gingerbread Man, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Hansel and Gretel to tell the tale of two bumbling con artists (Matt Damon and Heath Ledger) in 1800s Germany who pretend to vanquish witches and then get in over their heads when they try to save children who have been abducted in an enchanted forest by an evil, narcissistic queen (Monica Bellucci).
